Colorado Association of School Resource Officers

Title IX Basics for SROs

Rebekah Ottenbreit works as the Title IX Coordinator and as an English Language Development Specialist at the Colorado Department of Education.  In these roles, she supports Colorado schools and districts in fulfilling their responsibilities under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, as well as in their development and implementation of English Language Development programming.  Rebekah has worked in education for 25 years and speaks three languages.

This session will provide participants with a basic overview of school and district responsibilities under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.  Participants will learn what is included under the Title IX umbrella of “sex-based harassment” and school/district responsibilities to respond to sex-based harassment and prevent its reoccurrence.  Schools and districts fulfill these responsibilities through policies and procedures which vary according to location.  Therefore, this session will cover some of the ways schools and districts choose to structure their Title IX response.  In addition, the line between school/district responsibilities and the role of the SRO can sometimes become blurred.  So, this session will also address common misunderstandings, potential pitfalls, possible look fors, and questions to ask, as well as provide ideas for future training and collaboration between school districts and SROs.  This will be an interactive session with time provided for Q and A.
